The Challenge

When Sommerville began work on their horizontal directional drilling project, they faced noise mitigation challenges, including: 

• Close proximity to residence
• Frequently moving equipment
• Nearby powerlines

Unlike traditional construction sites, their location prohibited permanent noise barriers or ground penetration for support structures.

The Solution

Environmental Noise Control (ENC) recommended a specialized K-Rail mounted sound wall system specifically designed for situations where earth boring isn’t feasible. The patented design offered Sommerville several advantages:

• The newly redesigned double K-Rail frame supported barriers up to 20 feet high without requiring ground penetration
• Modular components allowed for rapid deployment and reconfiguration as work zones shifted
• Laboratory-tested acoustical blankets (available in STC-25 and STC-32 with NRC overlays) provided verified sound reduction
• Self-ballasting system ensured stability while maintaining mobility

The Results

Sommerville successfully maintained compliance with local noise ordinances throughout all construction phases. The K-Rail system’s flexibility enabled them to reposition barriers as needed without project delays. Local residents did not report any disruption, and the project avoided any costly noise violation penalties.
